This summer Holy Innocents' Episcopal Church is a placement site for an intern taking CPE – our very own seminarian, Hannah Kelly! Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is a program that teaches the practices of pastoral care to clergy, seminarians, and lay chaplains. Richard Cabot, MD and Harvard Divinity School lecturer, created the program in the 1920s. Students in CPE learn in an action/reflection model of facilitated small groups. Students work in hospitals, prisons, parishes, and other ministry settings providing pastoral care. Hannah will spend a third of her time working with me as her Preceptor (CPE jargon for mentor) as she delivers pastoral care to senior members of our parish. Because of COVID-19 Hannah will be reaching to members via phone calls, sending cards, and using technology, as well as writing occasional reflections to share with the parish. The other two-thirds of her service time will be at Kennestone Hospital. We are pleased that Hannah has chosen HIEC as her placement site this summer.
