Music

Music is at the heart of worship and community at Holy Innocents. Through hymns, choral music, organ repertoire, handbells, children’s music, and concerts, we seek to make music that is beautiful, thoughtful, welcoming, and rooted in the rich musical tradition of the Episcopal Church.

Our musical life embraces repertoire from many centuries and traditions—from Renaissance polyphony and Anglican choral music to spirituals, contemporary composers, newly written music, and the great hymns of the Church. Above all, music at Holy Innocents is something we make together.

Whether you are an experienced musician, someone returning to music after many years, or simply someone who loves to sing, we invite you to join the song.

Adult Choir

The Adult Choir provides musical leadership for the 10:15 AM Eucharist each Sunday and for special services throughout the church year. Supported by eight professional section leaders, the choir sings a wide range of sacred choral repertoire and helps lead the congregation in the great tradition of Episcopal hymn singing.

Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM. New singers are always welcome, and you do not need to be a professional musician—or an Episcopalian—to participate. A love of music, a willingness to learn, and a desire to be part of a community are the most important qualifications.

The choir also gathers for special musical events during the year, including workshops, retreats, concerts, and services for major feast days.

Handbells

Holy Innocents is home to five octaves of Schulmerich handbells, and our Handbell Choir is an active and growing part of the music ministry.

Ringers of varying levels of experience are welcome. Handbells offer a wonderful opportunity to make music in community, whether you have years of musical training or are discovering ensemble music for the first time.

The choir rings periodically in worship and is continuing to expand its repertoire and membership.

Organ

The organ plays a central role in worship at Holy Innocents, supporting congregational singing, accompanying the choir, and offering a rich repertoire of its own.

Our principal sanctuary instrument is a three-manual Schoenstein pipe organ, whose broad tonal palette is particularly well suited to Anglican worship, hymn accompaniment, choral music, and the organ repertoire of many periods and national traditions.

Organ music is heard during worship each Sunday and throughout the year in special services, concerts, and other musical offerings.

Children & Youth

We believe that children and young people belong at the heart of the Church’s musical life.

Children have opportunities throughout the year to sing and participate in worship, and we are especially grateful for our close relationship with Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. School ensembles and student musicians join us for special occasions during the year, including Episcopal School Sunday.

We hope that music at Holy Innocents helps young people discover not only the joy of making music, but also the experience of contributing their gifts to a larger community.

Friends of Music

For more than twenty years, Holy Innocents has welcomed outstanding musicians and ensembles through its Friends of Music concert series.

The series brings together artists from across Atlanta and beyond and reflects the breadth of musical life in our community. Programs may include choral music, chamber music, jazz, vocal recitals, instrumental music, and other creative collaborations.

Friends of Music concerts are intended not only for our parish, but for the wider community. We hope they offer opportunities to gather, encounter beautiful music, and experience Holy Innocents as a place where the arts are valued and celebrated.
