Prior to joining the Holy Innocents family, I had an emotional experience sitting with a student who was considering running away from home. She told me she felt her life was spiraling out of control because of her poor academic performance and her parents' disappointment in her. She believed her friends were excelling without her and leaving her behind while they figured out their college plans and future goals. She felt that leaving her old life behind and starting anew was the only option left. Although it was heartbreaking to see her in such a difficult situation, I found it intriguing that, among all places, she turned to the church for guidance. As her world seemed to be collapsing around her, the one place she felt safe enough to talk about it was the church.
As the weight of academic pressure and the influence of social media escalates, the role of the church becomes increasingly crucial as a safe haven for teenagers. Students need a space where they feel valued and loved, and the church seems to be assuming that position.
As we prepare to celebrate our students this coming Sunday, I can’t help but be proud of their commitment to the youth group and their incorporation of church into their overscheduled lives. These students have found a way to grow their faith and find shelter in the church from the chaotic world around them. As we commemorate our graduating seniors, acolytes, youth life team, and small group leaders, let’s remember how special it is to be able to influence their spiritual journey as a family. Let’s focus on their incredible achievements in this overwhelming society and applaud their dedication to our HIEC home.
Gratefully,
